As digital printing technology develops, there are more occasions than ever in which it can be faster and more cost effective to print with digital equipment.
Short-Run Cost
The most well-known benefit is that digital printing is usually more cost-effective for short to medium runs than offset lithography. With our G7 print methodology, quality is not an issue. WTP produces consistent color across all devices and substrates.
Our digital printing equipment has minimal setup time compared to offset. There is also no need for printing plates. Both of these factors keep costs low.
A good example of the benefits of digital printing is our inline booklet maker. It lets us print, collate, stitch, and trim three sides in one pass. It can do very low volumes and offers better pricing than offset on quantities up to around 750 books.
This inline process lets us pass along significant, aggressive cost savings. In turn, this lets our clients go after new, profitable booklet opportunities that they may not have previously considered. It makes for a great “foot in the door” sales strategy for prospective new clients. It also fattens profit margins on short-run stitched books that they are currently doing via offset.
Our digital print equipment is also an asset for production of short-run perfect bound books, manuals, publications, and programs. Digitally printed books are finished on our in-house perfect binder.

Digital Printing and Binding Equipment at Western Trade Printing
WTP has a state-of-the-art Ricoh 7500 digital press with a Plockmatic 350 inline booklet maker. The press + bookletmaker combo lets us produce finished, stitched books inline.
The Ricoh 7500 can do black-only or full color printing.
Maximum sheet size: 13” x 27”
Maximum image size: 12.5” x 26.5”
Maximum paper thickness: 18 pt. In addition to books, this capability makes it great for short-run packaging.
Plockmatic PBM 350
The PBM 350 can fold up 2 to 35 sheets to make booklets of up to 140 pages on 80gsm/20# bond, running inline at press speeds.
A unique feature of the PBM 350 is The SquareBack™ Spine.
The bookletmaker produces saddle-stitched books with flat, square spines, similar to that of a perfect bound book, as shown below. These flat books make stacking and packing far more efficient and easier than booklets produced on copiers. By lying flat, there is less chance of damage or scuffing during shipping.
Creasing and Folding Digital Stocks
Our equipment also handles creasing and folding of digital stocks. This eliminates the fiber cracking so often found in digitally printed materials.
Paper Inventory for Digital Printing Services
WTP has a large inventory of coated and uncoated text and cover paper available for all of our digital and offset printing services. This includes popular 80# and 100# gloss and dull (silk) book and cover stocks.
We also have a wide range of premium and premium recycled sheets available for premium projects.
Eco-Friendly Digital Papers and Substrates
All our paper and synthetic offerings are recyclable, which means you can freely print the recyclable logo on your printed projects.
Western Trade Printing only buys quality paper and synthetics that are responsibly manufactured to exceed USA regulations. Because of this, our house stocks are typically a higher quality sheet than most of the imported sheets in use today.
WTP is certified in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Chain of Custody Standards.
We practice lean manufacturing using G7 methodology and an all-digital color-managed workflow. Whenever possible, we use soy or other vegetable-based inks.
